Antioxidant Properties of Algae in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Compounds high in antioxidant activity counteract the formation of free radicals, which are linked to many human diseases and cancers. The objectives this study were quantify hydrophilic (HAA), lipophilic (LAA), total (TAA) algae collected US Virgin Islands. three divisions Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta. We hypothesize that HAA will be greater than LAA for all species. also hypothesized Phaeophyceae would have highest TAA compared other classes. In study, 28 species on St. Croix, USVI. ABTS, H2O2, horseradish peroxidase decoloration method was used determine then scanned using a UV-VIS Spectrophotometer at 730 nm. activities reported as µmol Trolox Equivalent (TE)/g Dry Weight (DW). For samples tested, Caulerpa prolifera had (97.281 ± 18.475 TE/g DW) while Dictyota jamaicensis lowest (1.999 0.889 DW). Chlorophyta mean (23.754 29.710 DW ) Phaeophyta (12.595 11.861 µmol/g mean.
